“Alex Wroten, who directed our documentary, is also a talented composer and musician. Apparently inspired by his remix work on our Hardly Gurning album, he has created, what can only be described as, a ‘left of field’ musical called The Gatekeepers. Alex describes it as an ‘Avant Rock Opera About Rejection’. In my understated British way I think it is rather good…nay, very good!
“He invited me to perform vocals for one of the characters which I found a fascinating departure from my normal way of working….effectively being a directed performer rather than a composer. Other character vocalists notably include The Residents, Molly Harvey, R. Stevie Moore and Shawn Phillips. Alex also invited a number of very talented instrumentalists to work on the project with him.
“The album was released internationally on 11th November via the UK label Think Like A Key Music on vinyl and CD plus digital. The CD includes 4 remixes from The Darkening Scale, Renaldo M, Cult With No Name and Axon Welter (wonder who that is?) The digital version also offers a further two alternative demo tracks, one of which I sang on.”
